Find Your People, Find Yourself: A Look Inside YMCA Camp Duncan
Some places you visit. YMCA Camp Duncan? It stays with you. Ask anyone who's spent time at our 337-acre home on Fish Lake, and they'll tell you: the campfires were magical and the adventures were unforgettable. But it’s also where kids learn about themselves and make friends for life!
Life Skills Disguised as Fun
Leadership. Adaptability. Empathy. Patience. These aren't buzzwords at Camp Duncan — they're what happens when you challenge yourself to try something new, when you navigate conflict with a cabin mate, when you realize you're capable of more than you thought.
One former counselor, now a parent, put it perfectly: "I learned valuable life lessons about patience and relating to kids that I still use as a father today (including singing the songs to my girls).” Another camper, looking back on their years at camp, said: "Camp set me up to be successful in any career I chose, teaching me leadership, adaptability, and empathy among many other lessons.”
For kids who face unique challenges, camp can be especially transformative. Parents of children with ADHD, diabetes, burn injuries, spina bifida, and other conditions have told us that Camp Duncan's medical camps and inclusive programs create space for their kids to just be kids.
"Camp Duncan has been a fantastic way for my son who struggles with ADHD to be able to participate and feel included," one parent shared. "The Inclusion team at the YMCA is amazing and helps teach and give the counselors the tools they need."
One camper who attended Camp I Am Me from ages 8 to 18 said simply: "Camp Duncan changed my life!”
Friends for Life
"I am still in contact with many of the friends I made at camp," one former camper told us, "and I'm so thankful to have them in my life still."
That's not unusual. In fact, it's the norm. One international Camp Duncan counselor shared that they still visit their camp friends — traveling all the way to England and Ireland to catch up. Another camper said it plainly: "No matter our time apart, we pick right up right where we left off." These aren't casual acquaintances; they're the kind of friendships that shape you.
One parent reflected on their own camp experience this way: "I met my husband at Camp Duncan in the summer of 1995. Camp Duncan will always hold a special place in my heart.” Twenty-six years of marriage later, they're still going strong.
What is it about camp that creates these bonds? Maybe it's the shared adventure of mastering the high ropes course or learning to canoe on Fish Lake. Maybe it's living in a cabin together, sharing chores, respecting differences, and figuring out how to be part of something bigger than yourself. Or maybe it's simply this: when you're away from screens and distractions, you actually see and connect with each other.
"Being free of TV and phones," one staff member reflected, "Camp Duncan made us all love the outdoors a little more. We developed a team and little family.”
People come back year after year to Camp Duncan. They come back as counselors, as parents sending their own kids, as volunteers, and as people who just want to reconnect with the place that shaped them.
Years later, they're still grateful. One person who spent years both as a camper and staff member summed it up this way: "As a kid every year, I had my suitcase packed for camp in February, and as a staff member I always had a countdown until the first day of staff training on my phone."
Camp Duncan’s Many Offerings
So, what does a typical day look like? At Overnight Camp, campers ages 7-17 live in cabins with other kids their age, choosing activities based on their interests — everything from archery to arts and climbing to canoeing. Offerings also include campfires, swimming, hiking, and plenty of adventures that will make for great stories later.
For families who want to stay closer to home, our Summer Day Camp offers the same magic without the overnight commitment. Summer Day Camp has programs for every age group from Explorers Camp (our youngest campers enjoying beach play and story time) to Navigators Camp (our oldest day campers tackling more advanced challenges). New in 2026 is our teen Adventurers Camp for those who have aged out of our Navigators Camp!
Your Turn
Ready to see what Camp Duncan is all about? Registration for both 2026 Summer Day and Overnight Camp is open! We'd love to welcome you.
Because here's the truth: Twenty years from now, your kids might not remember every activity they did. But they'll remember the friends they made, the confidence they gained, and the feeling of being fully, completely themselves.
And honestly? That's worth more than all the s'mores in the world.
At the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in camp regardless of their ability to pay. Learn more about financial assistance or our camp offerings by contacting us at 847-546-8086.
