A CLOSER LOOK
Being new in town is not an easy thing. Jennifer knows this better than most. Twenty years ago, she was newly divorced and raising her three children as a single parent when she moved to the community of Elmhurst on a blustery winter morning. Without family or a familiar atmosphere, Jennifer felt alone and scared–until, with the help of the YMCA’s scholarship assistance program, Jennifer and her children became members of the Elmhurst YMCA.
Soon their days and nights were filled with classes, afterschool activities, youth sports and summer camp. “The Y staff members and other parents truly cared about us, and welcomed us as if we were family,” Jennifer said. “The Y became a place for us to feel happy, safe and secure.”
Jennifer, now a Y employee herself, wonders what would have happened to her family without the compassion the Y provided. Now Jennifer is in a position to give back and she looks forward to helping provide a new generation of families the same incredible experiences and support she and her family were able to enjoy.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Elmhurst YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for over 61 years.
Between the swish of skates in the ice rink, the encouraging words of a coach and the splash of a swim lesson, the Elmhurst YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
Since 1952 the Elmhurst YMCA has served the thriving communities of Elmhurst, Melrose Park, Berkeley, Northlake, Addison and others. Today, for more than 8,521 members, 247 volunteers and 2,600 program participants, the Elmhurst YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
