YMCA Water Works Introduces Youth to Life-changing Experiences
Participants from the YMCA’s Water Works program, an innovative career-exploration initiative empowering local youth to dive into water related careers, recently took part in a unique life-changing trip to Camp Duncan. Camp Duncan is a YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago overnight camp located in Ingleside, Illinois. It specializes in fostering self-reliance and a love for nature, all amidst fun activities, such as campfires, canoeing, and swimming. Water Works youth ages 16 to 24 spent the day at Camp Duncan learning about new career paths, strengthening their teamwork skills, and experiencing the outdoors, many for the very first time.
“It was their first time in the woods, as most participants mentioned that they had never been outside of the city,” said Jacquelyn Lelo, Water Works Coordinator. “As a mentor, it was incredibly rewarding to introduce young adults to a new environment and experience that they may not have encountered without Camp Duncan and the Water Works program.”
Diving into Waterfront Careers
The highlight of the trip was an introduction to waterfront lifeguarding: a more advanced form of lifeguarding that builds upon the pool certifications participants had already earned earlier through Water Works. Camp Duncan staff shared the unique challenges of open-water environments and demonstrated the specialized skills necessary to keep people safe in lakes and other natural bodies of water.
Beyond the waterfront, participants also learned about the array of job opportunities available at YMCA of Metro Chicago overnight camps, like YMCA Camp Duncan, YMCA Camp MacLean, and YMCA Camp Independence. Staff explained how seasonal roles provide more than just work experience, they help young people build lasting friendships, develop leadership skills, and grow as part of a tight-knit community.
Building Stronger Teams
The Water Works visit at Camp Duncan wasn’t all about careers; participants also had the chance to practice teamwork in action. Through low rope obstacle courses, team rope games, and other group challenges, the participants worked on essential skills, like communication, conflict resolution, and leadership. These exercises are not only connected to camp life but also reinforced the program’s broader goals of career readiness and personal growth.
Stepping Outside Comfort Zones
For many of the Water Works participants, the trip was about much more than job exploration. It was an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, experience the beauty of nature, and see firsthand the value of community and teamwork.
By combining career exploration, outdoor adventure, and skill-building activities, the Water Works visit to Camp Duncan gave participants a fresh perspective on what’s possible for their careers, their futures, and themselves.
