Two Students. One Idea. Springfield Listened.
Two YMCA Youth and Government students helped pass a bill through the Illinois House of Representatives on April 15 that ensures the history and contributions of Latin American people are woven into history curriculums in Illinois elementary and high schools.
Payton Johnson and Cielo Camarena, both seniors in high school, brought forward this legislation as Youth Legislators during the 2024-2025 Youth and Government session and felt so passionate about it that they brought it to State Rep. Eva Dina Delgado. Delgado, a tireless youth advocate and proud Latina, agreed to champion the legislation in the Illinois General Assembly during the upcoming legislative session.
YMCA Youth and Government is a model government club for high schoolers where students take on the roles of state government. This 6 month programs culminates with a weekend in Springfield where nearly 1000 students throughout the state have a Youth Legislative Session at the State Capitol with bills they created and researched.
Johnson and Camarena took the hands-on experience they gained in learning the Illinois legislative process in Youth and Government and empowered themselves to make the change they want to see in the community. The YMCA strives to uplift youth through mentorship and experiential learning provided in programs like YMCA Youth and Government.
