Recap: 2024 Chicago Navy Week at the Y
Earlier this month, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago joined forces with the U.S. Navy to host an exciting week of events across our Association as part of the larger Chicago Navy Week program. During the week of August 5, more than 75 sailors participated in various education and community outreach events in the City of Chicago.
At the Y, we hosted several initiatives for youth and adults. Our YMCA summer Day Camps took on a nautical theme, inviting Navy sailors to interact with Day Camp participants. Day Campers learned about life in the Navy, participated in engaging activities, and heard firsthand stories from the sailors.
As part of our commitment to promoting the health of our community members, empowering them to advance their wellbeing, the Y’s expert instructor, DeAntae Sturghill led a unique bootcamp and was joined by a specialized Navy sailor to give it a “real” bootcamp feel at the South Side YMCA. This challenge was a series of four high-energy classes that blended the Y’s amazing fitness instruction with a taste of Navy training.
To underscore the growing partnership between the YMCA and the U.S. Navy, local business leaders and members of the YMCA’s boards also had the opportunity to attend an intimate luncheon with Vice Admiral Doug G. Perry, the Commander of Joint Force Command Norfolk and U.S. 2nd Fleet. Vice Admiral Perry shared insights on leadership and the Navy’s critical role in global security with Team Y and our guests.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this week-long celebration of adventure, learning, and camaraderie. And a special thanks to the brave individuals of the U.S. Navy for their service to our country and for helping our community members develop healthy habits and furthering their education.
