Karl A. Kemp Named Executive Director of the South Side YMCA

The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago announced today that Karl A. Kemp has been named Executive Director of the South Side YMCA. Karl brings more than 14 years of leadership experience in youth development, public education, sports administration, and organizational strategy to his new role.

“We were looking for an Executive Director who would build strong relationships and create even more opportunities for young people and families,” said Andre Goode, YMCA District Executive Director. “Karl brings experience leading youth programs, managing complex operations, and building partnerships across Chicago. I’m excited to see how he will guide the South Side YMCA forward.”

Most recently, Karl served as Executive Director of the Common Ground Foundation, where he developed a framework to expand youth programming and built partnerships with organizations, including Nike, the NBA Foundation, and Fifth Third Bank.

Karl previously demonstrated his vast leadership skills during his tenure at Chicago Public Schools. As Executive Director of Sports Administration, he oversaw athletic programs serving more than 35,000 student athletes, including Special Olympics participants, and managed a $20 million budget. His work expanded opportunities for young people through partnerships with organizations, including the Jr. NBA, Chicago Park District, and Chicago Fire.

Throughout his career, Karl has focused on building programs and partnerships that create more equitable opportunities for students and communities. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy Studies from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Keller Graduate School of Management.

“I’m excited to join the South Side YMCA, because this is a place with a strong history, and deep roots in the community,” said Kemp. “For nearly four decades, the South Side Y has created opportunities for young people, families, and neighbors to connect, grow, and thrive. I am excited to build on that foundation in the years ahead.”
