Celebrating Academic Excellence at the 13th Annual YMCA Community Schools Initiative Scholastic Spectacular
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, students from the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s Community Schools Initiative (Y-CSI) gathered at McKay Elementary School for the 13th Annual Scholastic Spectacular, a high-energy event celebrating teamwork, knowledge, and academic achievement.
The Scholastic Spectacular brings together teams of students from across Y-CSI community schools to compete in a Jeopardy-style quiz bowl, testing their knowledge across a wide range of subject areas. Over the past months, students worked collaboratively to study, prepare, and sharpen their skills while building confidence along the way. This year’s event also marked an exciting milestone as Y-CSI welcomed a team from the South Side YMCA for the very first time, expanding the spirit of friendly competition and connection even further across our YMCA association.
The Scholastic Spectacular also included lively performances featuring the Bass Drum Line, Earle Ballet Team, and the Langford Mane Attraction Dance Squad, energizing the crowd and showcasing the creativity and talent of Y-CSI students beyond the classroom.
After an exciting series of scholastic rounds, teams were recognized for their outstanding efforts: Pasteur Elementary School took home first place in the elementary division, with McKay Elementary finishing second. Then, McKay Elementary School earned top honors in the middle grade division, with Libby Elementary placing second. “I’m so glad we won! I wish I could have taken the trophy home to show my momma and grandpa — and even my friends on Fortnite — and sleep with it in my bed! But I couldn’t…so I slept with my medal instead,” shared Bentley C., a McKay Elementary student.
The Scholastic Spectacular continues to be a shining example of how Y-CSI programs support academic growth while fostering teamwork, confidence, and a love of learning.
The impact of the program was also evident in the voices of participants and families. Parent Angela L. of Earle Elementary highlighted the deeper value of the YMCA’s Before & After School Care offerings by noting that they provide more than childcare; they create a safe, supportive environment where students receive homework help, build confidence, and form meaningful relationships.
Angela also emphasized how Y-CSI staff and their enrichment opportunities, from dance to fitness and martial arts, help students explore new interests and grow. “They’ve become more than partners — they’ve become family,” she shared, reflecting the strong bonds built within the Y-CSI community.
Thank you to all the students, staff, families, and supporters who made this year’s event a success. We look forward to another year of learning and achievement ahead!
