A Decade of Imagination: YMCA Community Schools Initiative Hosts 10th Annual Destination Imagination Day
On Saturday, April 25, students from the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago Community Schools Initiative (Y-CSI) came together at Truman College for the 10th Annual Destination Imagination Day, a milestone event celebrating a decade of creativity, teamwork, and innovative thinking.
Destination Imagination is a core component of the Y-CSI program, engaging students throughout the school year in team-based problem-solving experiences. The curriculum is designed to develop essential skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, empowering students to think outside the box and work together to overcome challenges.
During the event, students rotated through four engaging stations:
- Instant Challenge Station: Teams tackled two fast-paced challenges that tested their ability to think on their feet, collaborate effectively, and problem-solve under pressure.
- Extended Challenge Station: Students presented their work on this year’s long-term challenge, UpBeat Future. Leading up to the event, teams created and performed a skit featuring a character overcoming a challenge. Each performance incorporated two different styles of music and a musical instrument. The students built the instrument themselves using provided materials, blending creativity, storytelling, and engineering.
- Truman College Tour: Guided by Truman College Recruiter Michael C., students explored the campus and gained insight into college life, helping them envision their future educational paths.
- Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Station: Led by Y-CSI partner iPlayGames, this interactive station encouraged students to engage in hands-on experiences such as Mario Kart, Robot Wars, and a Minecraft Treasure Hunt combining fun with STEAM learning.
The day concluded with lunch and an awards ceremony recognizing students’ hard work and teamwork. Congratulations to Pasteur Elementary School, who won the lower grade division, and McKay Elementary School, who took home the top honor in the upper grade division.
The lower grade division champions from Pasteur Elementary School reflected on their experience and the impact of the program. “I got to get to know my classmates better and have fun while growing my confidence and imagination at the same time” shared Lexie A. Fellow teammate Ashleen S. added that the event “forced us to use our minds in different creative ways as a team!”
Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers, staff, and partners who made Y-CSI's annual Destination Imagination Day possible. We extend a special thank you to the members of the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity and former YMCA staff for their support. We are also deeply grateful to Kathy O’Holleran, our Destination Imagination volunteer extraordinaire, whose tireless efforts and unwavering commitment over the past decade have been instrumental in building and sustaining this impactful partnership.
