A Century of Community: Celebrating 100 Years of the Irving Park YMCA
Earlier this month, the Irving Park YMCA marked 100 years of service, leadership, and impact in the Chicago community!
We commemorated this remarkable milestone at the Centennial Celebration, welcoming neighbors, supporters, and YMCA ambassadors at an evening filled with warmth, reflection, and joy.
The program opened with heartfelt remarks from Karen Dziagwa, Senior Executive Director, Irving Park YMCA, followed by inspiring stories from the Irving Park Y’s Fitness Director, Teen Advisor, and a current resident — each sharing how the Y has shaped their lives and strengthened their sense of belonging. The Irving Park Y’s commitment to community is also reflected in its long-standing residential program, which provides safe, affordable housing to individuals seeking stability and support — a vital part of the Y’s legacy and future.
"Back in 1925, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago built the Irving Park YMCA to support the spiritual, mental, social, and physical wellbeing of boys and girls on the growing Northwest Side,” said Karen. “Today, the Irving Park Y remains a hub of health, wellness, and youth development — offering quality after-school programs, summer camps, aquatics, sports, and teen leadership opportunities.”
One of the most memorable moments came when a 98-year-old member serenaded the crowd with a rendition of “Ramona,” a nostalgic tribute to the Y’s enduring legacy. Adam Alonso, CEO and President, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, followed with reflections on the Y’s future, and State Representative Lindsey LaPointe closed the program with a tribute to the Y’s role in building a stronger, more connected Chicago.
Later in the evening, guests joined in singing “Happy 100th Birthday” before cutting a celebratory cake — marking not just the end of the night, but the beginning of the next century of impact. Board member Sabrina Cimo closed out the night by sharing her personal story and expressing heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the celebration possible.
