A CLOSER LOOK
Sarah left an unstable home environment to move in with her grandparents last year. “She was desperately in need of community and a positive peer environment, as well as a place to find herself and decide who she wanted to be,” Sarah’s grandmother said. Fortunately for Sarah and her family, the Sage YMCA swim team, the Piranhas, provided her the opportunity to become a part of a caring and supportive community.
As Sarah learned to master her swim strokes last summer, she also grew in spirit and strength, from a timid child who lacked self-confidence into a dedicated and determined teen.
Sarah’s grandparents credit the Piranhas swim coaches for her personal growth and success. “They made it clear to swimmers and parents alike that character and attitude are priorities for this team,” Sarah’s grandmother said. “This policy has trickled down into our family life and made our entire family stronger.”
Sarah’s grandparents, long-time Y members, had no idea that Sarah’sparticipation on the team could change the very dynamic of their family structure. “We are so happy to be a part of the Piranhas community, and so grateful for all that they’ve given to Sarah and for the many ways our family has grown,” Sarah’s grandmother added.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Sage YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for over
Between the whistles of our sports camps, the splash that starts a swim meet, and the smile that says “you’re welcome,” the Sage YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
The Sage YMCA serves the thriving community of Crystal Lake. For more than 8,000 Y members, 20 volunteers and 600 program participants, the Sage YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
