Red Cross Lifeguard Training ( 6 classes )

Learn the skills and knowledge required to become a lifeguard, including how to recognize, prevent and respond quickly to aquatic emergencies. Learn CPR for the professional rescuer, AED and First Aid. Participants will receive certifications after attending all class sessions, passing all written exams, water skills and tests. Certifications are good for 2 years. Class fee includes lifeguard manual. Prerequisites: Participant must be age 15 or older and be able to pass pretest. (Pretest consists of: 300 yard swim using front crawl with rhythmic breathing and also using the breast stroke without stopping; swim 20 yards of either stroke, perform a surface dive and retrieve a ten pound brick in 10 feet of water and then return the brick 20 yards; and tread water for 2 minutes with hands out of the water.)

Swim Lessons Stage 1: WATER ACCLIMATION Water Acclimation is appropriate for preschool and school age participants. Students will become comfortable independently going underwater and learn how to exit the water safely. Safety is reinforced when students learn about the importance of lifeguard/adult supervision, asking permission before going into any body of water, and life jackets. Goggles are not recommended for this stage. The price indicated is a monthly rate. Swim Lessions Stage 3: WATER STAMINA Water Stamina is appropriate for preschool and school age participants. Students will build endurance to perform the safety sequence of swim-float-swim up to a length of the pool. Treading water up to one minute and getting to safety in deep water will be reinforced through jump-push-turn-grab sequence. Safety will be reinforced when students learn about sun safety and calling 9-1-1. Goggles are not recommended for this stage. The price indicated is a monthly rate. With generous funding support from SC Johnson, the YMCA of Metro Chicago is providing 1,000 Chicagoland youth with one month of free swim lessons designed just for you and your skill level in and around water.
