A CLOSER LOOK
Three out of four children ages five to ten do not receive the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day. This was a trend the Lake View YMCA wanted to reverse in its community so it partnered with the Burley Elementary School to create a special after school program for its students.
Each day after school Burley Elementary School students visit the Lake View YMCA to try a new form of fitness. From Zumba to yoga to muscle sculpting and regular old kickball, roughly 40 kids take part in this fitness fun, and then have their activity results tracked by Fitnessgram. Through this assessment tool, Lake View YMCA staff can measure these students’ aerobic capacity, flexibility, endurance and strength, and then adjust their fitness programming accordingly.
This partnership is one of many where the Y works with the community to help children see how staying active and praciticing regular fitness activies can improve their overall health and well-being.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Lake View YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for more than 86 years.
Between the the splash of a swim lesson, the whistles of summer camps and the smiles that say “you’re welcome”, the Lake View YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
Since 1928 the Lake View YMCA has served the Lakeview community of Chicago, located on the city’s north side. Today, for more than 4,100 members, 40 volunteers and 500 program participants, the Lake View YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
