Fry Family YMCA Staff Spotlight: Nigel Quick

Nigel Quick, Fry Family YMCA’s Member Engagement Director, has worked in the fitness and wellness industry for over a decade! Nigel joined the Fry Family Y team in May 2023 and has enjoyed every moment. He looks forward to growing with the Fry Family YMCA and takes pride in being a part of a community that promotes a safe and fun environment.

Nigel comes from a family of career soldiers and moved on several occasions while growing up. He enjoys being physically active and values spending time with his friends and family, whether it’s while traveling, at BBQs, or at sporting events!

Q: What is your job as the Member Engagement Director of the Fry Family YMCA?

A: I am very appreciative of the new role I have accepted here at the Fry Family Y. I am here to continue the culture that provides a great experience for members, as well as build on the potential we have here as a great resource for our community.

Q: What is your favorite part of working at the Y?

A: The part I have enjoyed the most about working for the Y are the staff and members. My first day on the job, I was greeted with warm welcomes. That truly is impactful, and I feel that is the difference between the YMCA and other organizations. You feel that sense of community that you don’t typically feel on a daily basis.

Q: What do you like most about the work that the Y does?

A: During my short time working for the Y, I can confidently say that the work done here is by people who want to provide a great resource and experience for their community. The revenue that is brought in, goes a long way. I have noticed that each individual has a mindset of “what else can we do for our community.” This is what makes me feel good coming into work each day.

Q: What is your favorite memory from working at the Fry Family Y?

A: I haven’t had a particular favorite memory yet, but I have been able to see friendly faces from my past jobs. Being in Naperville for quite some time has given me the opportunity to meet amazing people. Some of those people have been with the Fry Family Y, and it’s great to be able to reconnect with them!

Q: What are you most proud of in your career so far?

A: I take pride in putting our community members first, as well as creating a great environment for staff.

At the end of the day, everyone spends more time at work than with their families. That being said, I have always taken pride in creating a positive work environment to come to each day. I may not be able to make everyone happy, but I am proud of the fact that I always have that mindset first. You can expect that from me as the Member Engagement Director.

Q: What’s something new you’ve learned about yourself in the last year?

A: I am a father to a one-year-old, and that has been an amazing experience in itself. This past year of being a parent has continued to teach me patience and how to provide more for my growing family.

Q: If you could hang out with any person (real or fiction), who would you choose and why?

A: I would love to hang out with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson! Reason being is because he seems like a great husband and father who prides himself in staying fit. I also pride myself as being a great husband and father who wants to be strong and healthy for my family. I also enjoy his movies.

Q: If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?

A: Hands down all aspects of math. I want to be able to solve complex equations without having to really think too much or use a calculator.

Q: What piece of advice would you share with your younger self?

A: This thing called life is a marathon not a sprint. Specifically, be patient with yourself and don’t beat yourself up when things don't go according to plan. There will be times in life when your moment to shine will come, but try not to rush to them without really preparing.

Last but not least, take time to sit back, reflect on what you have accomplished, and continue to practice self-love. You may not feel love everyday from someone, so it's important to remember to give yourself that needed hug and praise. So buckle up, it's going to be a challenging but fun journey, and remember I’ve always got your back.

The Fry Family YMCA believes in the power of play. We play for fun and for progress. Whether it’s through group fitness, Day Camp, aquatics, or any of our other core community offerings, we empower our community to learn, grow, and thrive. We are committed to connecting all people to their purpose, potential, and each other.

Here at the Fry Family Y, we want to show off our dedicated and talented staff, as well as their amazing talents and contributions to our community. Does our mission resonate with you? We’re always looking for even more talented, community-oriented individuals who want to work at the YMCA!
