Adventure Guides, Princesses and Trailblazers 2020
At the YMCA, we often hear parents asking themselves if they’re spending enough quality time with their children…Our solution to this common problem? Adventure Guides, Princesses and Trailblazers - a family program designed to bring dads and their children closer together.
This extraordinary program encourages children to try new things, sets a foundation for positive, lifelong relationships between parent and child, and provides an engaging space for participants to make friends and have fun!
Polly Rhodes, Adventure Guides Program Director and mother of former participants, recounts her family’s experience with the program:
“Before I started working with the Adventure Guides program, I was a mom of participants. My boys loved their special adventures with their dad. They are now both in high school, but still have fond memories of their favorite trips. They both loved getting to go to Camp Tecumseh for the winter campout where they were able to participate in archery, riflery, horseback riding and riding down the black hole slide. It is unlikely they would have tried any of that if it weren't for Adventure Guides!... My favorite part of their overnight adventures, besides their quality time with dad, was the time to myself! As a mom with young elementary school kids who worked, life was always busy. It was nice to have some time to do things for myself or meet up with friends.
Besides the fun adventures, my kids made some great friends from another elementary school… and [they] continue to be friends in high school!
I have worked with a lot of programs during my 18 year tenure with the Y, but Adventure guides remains my favorite. I enjoy working with the Federation council and helping to ensure we are providing fun and different opportunities for dads and kids to participate in. I love seeing the kids trying new things and having a great time at our events!”
