A CLOSER LOOK
Five year old Cody has a rare white blood cell disease that requires intense and frequent hospital treatments which caused him to miss many of his swimming lessons at the YMCA. Assistant aquatics director Charli volunteered to conduct Cody’s make up swim lessons. When she began teaching Cody two years ago, he was afraid of the water. “Some days he didn’t want to even enter the pool area,” Charli said. So she and Cody developed their own style of working together. Over time Charli and Cody’s relationship flourished, and he began to trust her and take the steps to learn how to swim.
Two years later, Cody swims with confidence, and because of Charli’s patient and caring attitude he is comfortable in the water. “The Buehler Y has made a difference in Cody’s life,” Charli said, “but I don’t think he and his family realize what a difference Cody has made in mine.”

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Buehler YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for 40 years.
Between the whistles of our sports camps, the splash that starts a swim meet and the smile that says “you’re welcome,” the Buehler YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
The Buehler YMCA serves the thriving communities of Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights and more. For more than 16,000 members and 500 volunteers, the Buehler YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
