YMCA Scholastic Spectacular Brings Community and Competition to McKay Elementary
On Saturday, May 17, students from across our YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago Community Schools Initiative (CSI) gathered at McKay Elementary School for a day of friendly competition, creativity, and community at the 12th Annual Community Schools Initiative Scholastic Spectacular.
This annual event brings together CSI school teams for a fun and engaging jeopardy-style academic competition, challenging students to work together and demonstrate their scholastic knowledge in a wide range of subjects. In between the academic rounds, students shared their creativity via music and dance performances that celebrated their talents and school pride.
“Our Community Schools Initiative Scholastic Spectacular event is such a joy," said Eric Werge, CSI Executive Director. "It provides us with an opportunity to bring all of our amazing community schools together in one place and for our students to showcase both their academic knowledge and their artistic skills. Our students are so multi-talented, so to be able to provide a forum for them to showcase their talents to our CSI families and community is beyond rewarding for our team.”
The event also featured heartfelt testimonials from members of the CSI community. Speakers included Ma'Cadon, a 3rd grade student from Cather Elementary, and his mom, Maya, a dedicated "super parent" at the school. Triniti, a CSI alum and student at Butler College Prep, also reflected on how the program shaped her academic journey. Then, Yesenia, a Youth Enrichment Instructor and “super parent” from Haley Elementary, shared how CSI helped her family feel at home in a new neighborhood.
“The Y has been a gateway for my family and me to become part of a new community,” Yesenia shared. “When my kids first started, they didn’t know anyone and were timid. CSI helped them come out of their shell and form many new and wonderful relationships with both students and staff. They’ve become part of our family, and we look forward to the Y getting started every year!”
The Scholastic Spectacular wrapped up with food and fellowship in the McKay Elementary School cafeteria as students, families, and staff enjoyed a meal and celebrated their shared achievements.
Congratulations to McKay Elementary and Edwards Elementary for winning the Scholastic Competition in their respective age groups, and a huge shoutout to all our students for their participation, teamwork, and incredible energy! Thank you to everyone who made the 12th Annual Scholastic Spectacular a wonderful success. Your enthusiasm and dedication continue to build a bright future for our students!
