Remote learning support and in-person care help working families and area school districts

Counselors at Buehler Y support kids every step of the way as they get acclimated to their remote learning environment.

The Y has adapted its Out of School Time programming to include a remote learning program to support the changing needs of families as school districts have moved to e-learning plans for the fall.

For parents working from home and for those who are being asked to go back to the office, having to facilitate their children’s e-learning poses a huge challenge. To help, the YMCA is providing in-person support for students at most of its Y centers in the city and suburbs, as well as at selected off-site locations that have partnered with the Y. Parents can drop off their children for a full-day or half-day program depending on the type of learning plan their school district is offering.

Students from kindergarten through sixth grade will receive in-person support through the five hours of school-required learning time and the Y counselors will also make time for social, physical, and creative activities during the day. Students are divided up into cohorts or “pods” of no more than 15 children and one counselor. The "pods" remain together for the entire week to promote social distancing and minimize unnecessary interactions. The Y is following the same successful safety precautions that it has had in place throughout the spring and summer for its Emergency Response Childcare Program for essential workers and In-Person Summer Camps.

“It is a lot to ask of working parents to balance job responsibilities and provide for e-learning support to their children at the same time,” said Richard Malone, our president, and CEO. “The YMCA is here for families to offer practical support. We are not a replacement for the classroom. We are a support system.”

Financial assistance for the Y’s remote learning support program is available in certain situations because we believe that families should never be denied access to our services because of an inability to pay.

If you or anyone you know could benefit from our remote learning support program, please contact your preferred Y location listed above.
