November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Every November, we recognize National Diabetes Awareness Month and bring attention to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. A few ways to get involved include educating yourself and others, giving back, and knowing your risk. By spreading awareness of diabetes we can diminish existing misconceptions and improve our health outcomes!

During National Diabetes Awareness Month, inform yourself and others, about this disease:

1. Knowledge is power-  Understanding the basics of diabetes will help you make more informed health decisions. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, diabetes is a lifelong disease that affects how your body turns food into energy.

  • Type 1 diabetes prevents the body from producing insulin and is often diagnosed in children and young adults.

  • A majority of people with diabetes have Type 2, which develops over time and prevents the body from properly using insulin to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

  • Gestational diabetes develops in pregnant women and increases the risk of health complications for the baby and the likelihood the woman may develop Type 2 diabetes later in life.

2. Understand your family history– Family history is one of the most significant health predictors and can be used to create a personalized healthy lifestyle that best fits your needs.

  • According to the Cleveland Clinic, 57 million Americans have an impaired fasting glucose condition known as prediabetes. Take this quiz to find out your risk.
