Lake View Y and Chicago Red Stars team up to raise funds and empower girl athletes

When National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team the Chicago Red Stars learned about the Lake View YMCA’s Just Us Girls Sports Camp—a day camp experience that empowers girls aged 5-11 to build their mental and physical strength through sports—the team was so inspired that they decided to partner with the Y on a fun, inspiring event for the whole family.

On Sunday, July 18 at 5pm, in Bridgeview’s SeatGeek Stadium, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago and the Chicago Red Stars are hosting an outing at the Chicago Red Stars match against OL Reign, a rival team from Tacoma, Washington and home of U.S. Olympic soccer player Megan Rapinoe.

Attendees will be able to enjoy discounted tickets and reserved seating for Y families, making for the ultimate Sunday evening sports event! And the evening’s community-centered joy doesn’t stop there: the Chicago Red Stars is generously donating $5 from each ticket sold to the YMCA of Metro Chicago’s Annual Fund. This contribution will directly support our mission of strengthening Chicagoland’s youth, families, and communities through programs that focus on academic readiness, character development, violence prevention, and fitness and healthy living.

Jim Powers, Youth Services Director at the Lake View YMCA, is particularly excited for Just Us Girls Sports Camp participants and families to join in on the fun.

“The game takes place the Sunday before Just Us Girls Sports Camp starts, so this outing will be the perfect opportunity for everyone to get to know each other better,” said Powers. “We’re beyond thrilled to cheer on the Chicago Red Stars, the city’s first professional women’s soccer team, as they partner with us to bring community members together over an exciting sports event.”

Brandon Krozel, Lake View YMCA Executive Director, echoed Powers’ sentiment, underscoring the importance of positive role models for youth and budding athletes.

“Through our camps—and all of the Y’s youth programming, really—our foremost goal is to set a foundation for our kids to grow into who they want to become,” said Krozel. “The fact that we’re able to bring our families to see the Chicago Red Stars’ legacy of athleticism, empowerment, and teamwork in action is such a gift.”
