Impactful careers rooted in community: working at the Y

At the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, we’re on a mission to strengthen Chicagoland’s children, families, and communities—and this work is possible thanks to our incredible staff.

Consistent with the Y’s lifelong, whole-person approach to wellness, we endeavor to support our employees at every stage of their careers. We embody our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility by investing in our staff’s personal and professional development, providing support systems for employees of all identities, and creating a friendly, inclusive work environment.

Below, three of our staff members share their stories and perspectives on working at the Y:

Glamour Valentine, Site Director at Dr. Effie O. Ellis YMCA Head Start

What roles have you held at the Y, and what do you currently do?

I was previously a Master Teacher at the High Ridge YMCA for two years and was later promoted to Site Director. I am currently the Site Director at Dr. Effie O. Ellis YMCA Head Start.

How has the Y contributed to your professional growth?

The Y has contributed to my professional growth profoundly. While working at the Y, I have gained ample professional development skills within the field of early childhood education. I recently completed my master's degree in teaching and received my Professional Educator License (PEL) through a collaborative cohort between the YMCA, El Valor, and National Louis University.

What's your favorite thing about working at the Y?

I admire the Y's commitment to supporting staff in obtaining continued professional development skills. It is imperative that professionals within the field of early childhood education stay abreast of the best practices in supporting children and families. The Y is diligent in providing effective professional development opportunities, which I truly appreciate. Additionally, it is essential that communities within Chicago are offered quality child care programs, and I appreciate the Y's continued strides in supporting children, families, and communities throughout the Chicagoland area.

Xadrian Wilkins, Youth Services Director City North

What roles have you held at the Y, and what do you currently do?

I’ve served in a variety of roles at the Y, including Summer Camp Counselor, Youth Enrichment Instructor, and School Age Manager. Currently, I have the title of Youth Services Director City North, where I oversee the Y’s offsite after-school programming at Jonathan Y. Scammon Elementary School, Moos Elementary School, Hayt Elementary School, and Boone Elementary School, as well as serving as director of the Esports program at the Irving Park YMCA.

How has the Y contributed to your professional growth?

The Y has given me multiple opportunities to grow as an employee and as an individual.

Working with my supervisors Michael, Ron, and Ali has given me tools to grow and to show what I can give not only to an organization but to the community as well.

What's your favorite thing about working at the Y?

At the Irving Park YMCA, we have self-care Fridays where staff can come in and play basketball, work out, and eat a meal before we start our Friday workday.

Elena Garcia, Membership and Wellness Director at the Lake View YMCA

What roles have you held at the Y, and what do you currently do?

When I entered my first year of college, I was seeking employment that would be flexible with my school schedule and found myself at the Y as a Youth Enrichment Instructor at Irving Park YMCA. During the summers, I also worked as a Unit Leader at the center’s camps. I am so grateful that the Y was able to work with me as I completed my bachelor’s degree and am proud to say I am a first-generation college graduate! Upon graduating, I knew I wanted to continue working at the Y and accepted a full-time position as the Youth and Family Program Coordinator at Lake View YMCA. From there, I was promoted to a newly designed Family Engagement Director role. Thanks to the guidance and innovation of our senior leadership, I felt empowered every step of the way. Recently, I have furthered my professional growth and have accepted a new role as Membership and Wellness Director at Lake View YMCA.

How has the Y contributed to your professional growth?

When I started my Y career right after high school, the Y was able to set a foundation of professionalism for me. I have learned the skills of discipline, time management, inclusiveness, and adaptability in any situation. On top of that, the Y has helped me live a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. Since I have begun my journey at the Y, I feel like the best version of myself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually!

What's your favorite thing about working at the Y?

My favorite aspect of working at the Y is the people I have met and building relationships with those around me. I am surrounded by coworkers, colleagues, and peers who have allowed me to grow personally and professionally through their support and guidance. I also enjoy interacting with members that come from all different walks of life.
