Meet Our Day Camp Team: Shaylee Sloan

Shaylee Sloan, Youth Program Manager at the Irving Park YMCA, grew up in Niles, Illinois, and attended Maine East High School. In 2019, she graduated from North Park University in Chicago where she received her BA in Psychology. She played basketball throughout college and still plays now when she can find time. She has been a part of the Irving Park Child Care family since summer of 2017, when she worked at Day Camp! She’s passionate about supporting and guiding youth and their families in navigating the world.

Q: What is your favorite part of working at the YMCA?

A: My favorite part of working at the YMCA has to be building relationships and core memories with children, their families, and, of course, staff.

Q: What do you like most about the work that the Y does?

A: What I like most about working at the Irving Park YMCA is how family-oriented the team is. The leadership team really cares about one another, and it shows. They try to make everyone and anyone feel welcomed, comfortable, and heard.

Q: What is your favorite part about Day Camp at the Y?

A: My favorite part about Day Camp is watching friendships build and grow, at both the camper and staff level. I am grateful to have made some lifelong friendships working at the Y.

Q: What is your favorite memory from Day Camp at the Y?

A: Two of my favorite memories from Day Camp are the yearly water balloon fights with all the groups, and the time we had a Carnival, and the campers picked out counselors to pie in the face.

Q: What are you most proud of in your career so far?

A: I am most proud of how much I have grown professionally and personally during my time at the Y.

Q: What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to find out?

A: I love photography!

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be (and why)?

A: If I could have any superpower, I would want to be able to teleport, to be able to travel the world. Also playing tag would be fun!

Q: What’s the last song you listened to?

A: Flower by Miley Cryus.

Q: What’s one thing on your bucket list?

A: Travel to Greece.

The YMCA of Metro Chicago believes in the power of play. We play for fun and for progress. Day Camp at the Y empowers Chicagoland youth to do mighty things — making friends, developing new skills, creating life-shaping experiences, and so much more!

Our experienced and talented counselors and staff are committed to making sure your camper experiences a full day of play, exploration, learning, and personal growth. Here at the Y, we want to show off our Day Camp team’s amazing talents and contributions to our community — and find even more talented, community-oriented individuals who want to work at the YMCA!
