Sports

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming active and developing healthy habits they will continue throughout their lives. In a Y sports program, your child will meet friends, learn new skills, improve his or her fitness and most importantly have fun! Whether it's gaining the confidence that comes with learning a new sport, building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, or refining and improving skills, participating in sports at the Y is a bout building the whole athlete, inside and out. Make-up classes are available for select classes. No refunds will be given when make-up classes are offered.

 

 PRESCHOOL SPORTS CLASSES

Sport & Swim (ages 3-6)
This class combines fun in the pool with a sports mix. Each week we will be active playing games and sampling different sports. In the pool, your child will participate in swim lessons. The swimmers will be in classes per ability level. Click here to register

Basketball Parent & Tot (ages 2-3)
Our parent/child sport classes introduce young tots to the world of sports by teaching 21stcentury skills to young athletes such as sharing, taking turns and interacting with others. Basic Basketball skills will be taught in this classes and parents are encouraged to take part in the fun. Click here to register

Basketball Level 1 (ages 4-6)
This class is designed to work on the basic fundamentals of basketball such as passing, dribbling and movement. These classes will focus on hand-eye coordination and introduce the ideas of sportsmanship and team play. Click here to register

Soccer Parent & Tot (ages 2-3)
Our parent/child sport classes introduce young tots to the world of sports by teaching 21st-century skills to young athletes such as sharing, taking turns and interacting with others. Basic soccer skills will be taught in these classes and parents are encouraged to take part in the fun! Click here to register

Soccer Level 1 (ages 4-6)
Boys and Girls will learn the basics of soccer in this great introductory class. Junior athletes will learn to dribble, pass and shoot along with gameplay in a fun atmosphere. Click here to register

Tumbling Parent & Tot (ages 2-3)
This tumbling class is open to boys and girls. This is an introductory class to develop strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness while learning gross motor skills for tumbling. Your little one will also learn tumbling vocabulary and how to participate in a tumbling class setting to set them up for success in their tumbling classes to follow. Click here to register

Preschool Tumbling (ages 4-6)
This tumbling class is open to boys and girls. This is an introductory class for preschool-age children ready to develop coordination, body awareness and gross motor skills while working on listening skills, social skills and following directions providing them with a strong foundation to build on in their tumbling classes to follow. Curriculum is progressive with a different body position and concentration each week.

YOUTH SPORTS CLASSES

Sport & Swim (ages 6-12)

Volleyball (ages 9-13)
This class will focus on skills that include serving, passing, setting, hitting and the rules of the game in a fun and noncompetitive environment. Click here to register

Floor Hockey (ages 9-12)
Learn the fundamentals of stick handling, passing, shooting, and teamwork. Games will be played each week. Click here to register

Tumbling Level 1 (ages 7-12)
Movement through our tumbling levels is based on an end of session evaluation. This ensures that your child builds their tumbling skills safely off of a solid foundation. Tumblers will work to master many skills in this level. Some key skills introduced and worked in level 1 include: backward roll, cartwheel, handstands and bridges. 

Tumbling Level 2 (ages 7-12)
Movement through our tumbling levels is based on an end of session evaluation. This ensures that your child builds their tumbling skills safely off of a solid foundation. Tumblers will work to master many skills in this level. Some key skills introduced and worked in level 2 include: backward roll to pike stand, hurdles, cartwheels on both sides, handstand and backbend. 

Basketball Level 2 (ages 7-12)
Focuses on developing a positive attitude about fair play and teamwork. The YMCA instructor will focus on teaching the basic of dribbling, passing and shooting. This coed class will be a slam dunk for your player. Click here to register

Soccer Level 2 (ages 7-12)
Boys and Girls will learn the basics of soccer in this great introductory class. Junior athletes will learn to dribble, pass and shoot along with game play in a fun atmosphere. Click here to register

Dodgeball (ages 9-12)
Dodgeball is a team sport in which players try to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves. There are over 30 dodgeball game variations and teams of 6 players will be formed in this exhilarating sports class. Click here to register

YOUTH AND HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS LEAGUES

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament (grades 4-8)
Grab your friends and sign up as a team of 3-5 players for two guaranteed basketball games in this double elimination tournament bracket. All skill levels are welcome for co-ed play in which emphasis will be on good sportsmanship while promoting healthy competition.

Youth Wiffleball League (grades 4-8)
The Y brings the popular wiffleball baseball game indoors! Play the ball off of the ceiling and rafters for outs. Hit one off the curtain for a home run. Teams pitch to themselves while the defense has 3 fielders, no baserunning. Sign up as a team of 3-5 players or individually. 

Fall Youth Basketball League (grades K-8)
The Y Youth Basketball League is the perfect fit for you and your family. Our leagues are focused on developing your child’s skills and overall enjoyment for the sport of basketball. Teams will have volunteer coaches for all age levels. All teams will have one practice a week with day and time set by the volunteer coach. Game days will be Saturdays. Teams may travel within a 30 minute radius of IBY. Volunteer Coaches are needed and appreciated for the success of the league. Please contact Gary Grasch at ggrasch@ymcachicago.org to volunteer. 

Fall Youth Soccer League (grades K-8)
The Indian Boundary YMCA soccer league is a developmental program for all youth players and all skill levels. Our trained and knowledgeable coaches will develop the physical skills and techniques your child needs to enjoy the game of soccer for life. All teams will have one set practice night per week and one game a week with a playoff tournament at the end of the year (8 games, plus playoffs). Practice schedules will be announced. All teams will be guaranteed one practice the week prior to the league start date. All of our leagues promote competing in a fun and friendly environment. We focus on the whole child. Coaches will build your child’s confidence through skill work and character development; putting an emphasis not only on athleticism but also instilling values such as teamwork, respect, and responsibility. Game locations may vary.

REFEREE IN TRAINING (ages 12-18)

If you are interested in learning how to referee basketball, this class will give you a hands-on approach. You will learn proper mechanics, court positioning, how to work 1 man and 2 man games, rules discussions, and much more from a current Illinois High School Association Basketball Referee. You will also be able to work some Youth Basketball League games alongside the IHSA Official where you will receive real-time feedback and mentoring. There will be 3 oncourt (classroom style) learning sessions before some game officiating in the Youth League.

Coaching at the YMCA is a wonderful opportunity to grow closer to your child, as well as touch other children’s lives.
