Specialty Camps

STEM Camp Options

All youth registered in specialty camp options will participate in traditional camp activites including swimming and field trips. 

Little Bits Camp:

Age: 6-13
Time: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Little Bits is a STEAM program focused on unlocking the inner scientist in every young person. Campers will go through a complete scientific journey broken into four stages: invention cycle, guided challenges, open challenges and youth drawn challenges.

IIT Computer Discovery 

Age: 10-14 (GIRLS ONLY)

Time: 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. (Monday-Thursday)

This camp offering is a partership between the Illinois Institute of Technology and the YMCA of Metro Chicago. The camp will take place for two consecutive weeks. Due to the camp building upon concurrent daily skills and weekly skills, a two week commitment is mandatory. Parents should not register if the commitment can not be fulfilled. Pricing and dates for this camp are TBD.

Movie Making/Audio Visual

Age: 10-13

Time: 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. (Monday-Thursday)

This camp is designed for youth who have a passion for storytelling and seeing their stories come to life! Campers will have the freedom to be creative and execute a group story from start to finish, with a final project being a visual story. Campers will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to create behind the scenes and will utililize computer programming, cameras and AV equipment. Due to this camp building on concurrent daily and weekly skills, a three week commitment is mandatory in order for a child to participate. Parents should not register if the commitment can not be fufilled.

Wet-N-Wild Camp:

Age: 6-14
Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Keep cool in the pool this summer while getting a little wet-n-wild in the pool. Campers will learn a variety of water sports and games, participate in daily swim lessons, learn water safety and many more fun activities.

Registration Dates:

Registration for all camps begins Monday, January 14th for members and Monday, January 21st for non members (early registration is strongly recommended) and will continue until all camps are full. Due to staff ratio requirements, NO additional spots will be added once camp is full. Please plan accordingly.

Payment and Financial Aid Information

At the time of registration, camper slots will be held with a $25 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit fee for each camper per week. Deposits are applied toward the cost of each session. A $45 ($10 for each additional child) non-refundable, non-transferable registration fee will also be due upon registration. All balances for the following week must be paid in full no later than Wednesday. Your child will not be allowed in camp if fees are not paid. All deposits and fees are non-refundable. Your child must attend all five days of camp. There will be no refunds granted. If your child is sick, a doctors note must be presented to warrant a refund.

*Personal checks for camp payments are not accepted Cancellations/Refunds/Credits Refunds or credits for a camp are available prior to June 1, 2018 only! However, the deposit of $25 per weekly deposits are non-refundable deposit.

Financial Assistance

Due to our limited YMCA scholarship money, we require all families in need of financial assistance to first apply for Illinois Action for Children (AFC). Applications can be downloaded below and/or picked up at the South Side YMCA Member Service Desk. Anyone applying for Action for Children must make an appointment to meet with the Youth Director or Billing Coordinator. Action for Children applications must be signed by the aforementioned before submitting (failure to do so will delay the approval process). If you are not approved before the first day of camp, you will be responsible for paying the full rate of camp until an approval (through August 31) is received. Regardless of your approval status, you are required to remit a $25 deposit (per week) at the time of registration (unless an approval letter is presented at the time of registration). All deposits will be applied toward your total weekly (and monthly when applicable) balance due. If you are approved for AFC, you are responsible for paying the parent assigned monthly co-pay each month IN ADDITION to the differentials. The differential is the weekly cost of our program less the daily rate paid by AFC. You should begin submiting your application April 1st to ensure you are approved by the start of camp. No NEW AFC applications will be accepted after June 28, 2018.

If you are approved, AFC will assign you a monthly copayment based on your household size and income. AFC is considered a third party source of funding and is not connected to the YMCA in any way. As a form of courtesy and customer service, the South Side YMCA Camp Director and/or Billing Coordinator will assist you with the process of completing and submitting your application as much as possible. It is your responsibility to submit all paperwork and provide a copy of the receipt (please write your child’s name on the receipt) to the Camp Director. The South Side YMCA does not assume responsibility for AFC approvals or denials. The best way to ensure your paperwork is received is to physically submit your paperwork to AFC and receive a receipt. Please also be advised AFC is only open three days/week: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, so please plan accordingly.

If you are denied assistance from Action for Children, you are welcome to pick up the YMCA Scholarship Packet from the Member Service Desk. Financial assistance from the YMCA is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Upon filling out the YMCA packet, you will need to return the completed forms to the South SIde YMCA.

Action for Children Workshops:

The Youth Director will facilitate weekly workshops to assist parents with the AFC process. Workshops will take place weekly on a designated evening (based on the Directors availability) at 6:00 pm. Please make an appointment with the front desk to attend the workshop. Parents shoud bring all neccessary paperwork including income information for all jobs worked with them to the workshop. If you are unable to make the workshop, please reach out to the Director to schedule an alternative day and time. Please refrain from arriving without an appointment, as the Director may not be in the building.

Day Camp Copayment Due Dates:

Copayments are due regardless of how many days in the month your child attends camp. Copayments cannot be prorated (no exceptions). Copayments are due on the following days (1st Monday of each month):
