There are many things you can do to keep your body healthy, including your heart. One of the best heart healthy activities is swimming. Swimming is easy on the body and doesn’t require any special eqiupment. Swimming not only helps the heart, but it also helps the lungs and mind. In fact, by learning proper breathing in the water, you train your lungs to use oxygen more efficently.
Like running, swimming is an aerobic activity. However, they effect the heart in different ways. On average, your heart rate while swimming is 17 beats per minutes lower than while running. Also, due to the position of the body while swimming vs. running (prone vs. upright), swimming allows for a stronger blood flow back to the heart allowing the heart to pump a higher volume of blood with each contraction. The water pressure also helps with increasing the flow back to the heart.
