When many people think of the Y, they may not think of karate. The South Side YMCA has been offering karate for many years and has proven to be a program with long term benefits and life long lessons. Often times Japananese ancient art of karate of associated with violence. However, that couldn’t be anythiing further from the truth. At the Y, the program starts out with teaching children about respect. The Sensei, or instructor, bows to the students as they return the bow as a sign of respect towards eachother. The students start with the basic skills in karate including, kicks and punches. As they earn higher belt ranks, some youth with begin to spar while wearing protective equipment.
Karate and martial arts have proven in many cases, to grow indivuals self-esteem and discipline. Studies have even shown that kids who were acting out in school and at home, who’ve taken up karate have come to settle down after learning the art. Other studies show that children who have been diagnosed with ADHD have also learned to channel thier energy while learning positive social skils. On top of all that, karate requires concentration and attention which can be transfered to other activties the students participate in and often carries over in to school. Not only will the skills tranfer well, they will also be discussed within the class.
