Summer Camp - Staff Training

Staff Training

Staff complete a week long, in-depth training that covers everything from homesickness, basic first-aid, teambuilding, campfire cooking and making FUN! Specialist training starts a week prior and covers program area training so that we can ensure a consistently high quality camp for all of our campers. Training begins on Saturday with CPR & First Aid for staff who have not yet received their certifications. Friday, the rest of the staff arrive and are ran through the same schedule as our campers so that they can know exactly what a week or session at camp will feel like! Staff will participate in swim tests, campfire and rotation sign ups just like your camper. Sunday-Thursday staff will have both classroom learning sessions on development and behavior as well as outdoor trainings that include gaga ball, climbing tower facilitation, teambuilding and much more! The end of the week will close with our Farewell Fire and Bead Ceremony and slideshow. Prior to the arrival of your campers, staff are asked to help clean up camp and prep great activities for the summer!

Who We Hire and How We Do It!

We hire talented and enthusiastic college students and graduates that are looking to enrich the lives of our campers and motivate each other to greatness. Many of our staff were once campers themselves, and come back to camp in order to mentor the next generation of campers. Counselor applications are received from many different states and different countries. We travel to Summer Hiring Fairs in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota to find staff with different aspirations, talents and hobbies. We aspire to offer your camper a staff that will role model positive behavior, demonstrate our core values daily, teach new skills and uphold the mission of the Y.

Our hiring process starts in February and includes an intensive hiring search, application process and background check. Interested applicants apply with an online application and optional uploaded resume/cover letter. Staff will complete interviews with our Directors before they will be considered for one of our positions. Positions range from being an in-cabin counselor, to program specialists and program coordinators.
