The McCormick YMCA Just Got a Whole Lot Bigger

The McCormick YMCA celebrates its new aquatics center and other additions with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony."

On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, the McCormick YMCA celebrated an exciting new expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Donors, community leaders, board members, government officials, and YMCA staff gathered to tour the additional 13,000 square feet — home to a new aquatics center, family locker rooms, and two multi-purpose rooms. This $9.4 million expansion will serve residents of Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Hermosa, and nearby Wicker Park.

The Robert R. McCormick Foundation and their President and CEO, David Hiller, were a significant part of this expansion. Dick Malone, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metro Chicago, went on to say the Foundation “wholeheartedly embraced the concept of having a safe haven in a community that has been underserved for decades — so families can build the needed life skills for a better future.”

The Y has always been committed to water safety and believes that year-round access to a pool is essential to the well-being of every community. The McCormick YMCA’s new aquatics center includes two pools: a lap pool for swimmers and a 4-foot pool dedicated to swim instruction.

Denise Lam, Executive Vice President and COO of YMCA of Metro Chicago, shared the impact the new aquatics center is estimated to have on the community: “We expect it to provide over 1,200 swim lessons in the next year, and beyond that, we’re also excited that there will be dozens of jobs provided to this community.” She also added that “last year, the YMCA of Metro Chicago offered 30,000 swim lessons across the Chicago area, and more than a thousand of these swim lessons were provided at little to no cost to the family," as part of the Y's commitment to water safety.

The additions to the McCormick YMCA center are officially open to the public. Visit the McCormick YMCA website to learn more about our new swimming options and the job opportunities at our aquatics center.
