Meet Our Counselors: Katie

How did you first become involved with Camp MacLean?
My first summer at Camp MacLean was when I was ten years old - I was in the aquatics program and was instantly enthralled by the camp community. A couple of summers later I was canoeing down the Fox River with my fellow Pioneer campers, and after several years on staff, I could not have been more honored to run the Pioneer Program myself. I was so thankful to have been given the opportunity to give our campers the same unforgettable experiences that I was given as a child.

What is your favorite part of Summer Camp?
One part of camp that I have always loved is the sense of newness wrapped in familiarity. Both sensations are so strongly intertwined in every aspect of camp: the new friends constantly being made and the reunions with old friends, in attempting unfamiliar activities while also honing abilities in ones you've been acquainted with, and in viewing camp's beautiful landscape with a fresh perspective after spending some time away.

What is your most meaningful camp experience?
For me, it's impossible to pinpoint one experience at camp that is more important to me than others. Saying that camp has become a home away from home is an understatement - it is my home. Period. The people I've met, the memories I've made, the skills and lessons I've learned, have shaped me more than any other single aspect of my life. I could not be more thankful for the single week I went to camp in 2001, because it opened the door to so much more than I ever thought possible.
