A CLOSER LOOK
A cancer diagnosis can feel like a bad dream you’re unable to wake up from. Where you once spent your time concerned with traffic jams or finding the time to make dinner, your thoughts, time and energy have now been filled with chemotherapy, hair loss and exhaustion.
Leaning Tower YMCA member Amber knows only too well the difficult road one faces in the wake of a cancer diagnosis. For Amber, who at 31 years old found out she had stage 2 breast cancer, her YMCA, once just a place where she found fitness and fellowship, became her saving grace.
“It felt good to have a routine,” Amber said, and coming to the Y allowed her to come to a nurturing environment that allowed her to focus on getting well and strong. It also helped her begin a completely new chapter of her life. As of June 2012, Amber successfully completed chemotherapy and radiation and has been able to build her strength —both inside and out—due to the resources and caring support of her friends at the Leaning Tower YMCA.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Leaning Tower YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for 46 years.
Between the splash of a swim lesson, the smile that says “you’re welcome” and the whistles of sports camps, the Leaning Tower YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
Since 1968, the Leaning Tower YMCA has served the diverse communities of Niles, Forest Glen, Park Ridge, Edgebrook and Norwood Park. For 8,645 members and over 974 program participants, the Leaning Tower YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
