Member Spotlight: Meet Griffin!

March 09, 2015

Meet Griffin.

He has a form of autism known as Asperger Syndrome and has been swimming at the Lake View YMCA for nearly seven months. Griffin has been taking private swim lessons during the past three months and tells us that he “likes being taught by a really awesome person (Jeannie).” His mom shared that Griffin benefits from swimming because the water has a calming effect on him. She also shared that Griffin is becoming strong - he has hypotonia or low muscle tone - and swimming is the best exercise for him.

We are proud of Griffin and the progress that he is making in learning to swim and the confidence that it is producing. We are equally proud of Griffin’s other achievements.

He has a passion for classical music and retro video games. He also loves playing the piano and making art. Because of his Aspergers diagnosis, he views the world in a unique and amazing way. He has difficulty with the concept of death so he came up with the phrase “Pick two flowers with one hand” to replace “Kill two birds with one stone.” that is currently featured as part of a campaign for Paper Clouds Apparel. PCA features the work of artists with special needs and 50 percent of profits go to support causes associated with the artists.

You, too, can “Pick 2 Flowers with 1 hand!” Check out Paper Clouds Apparel at to order a shirt featuring Griffin’s artwork.
