A CLOSER LOOK
The YMCA is often thought of as a community center. A place where individuals and families can come together to become healthier inside and out. A Kroehler Family Y working mom took it a step further, she called the YMCA a lifesaver. After her son finished the fifth grade, all afterschool care options seemed to evaporate for the family, so the mother was at a loss for what to do for her son. She felt strongly that pre-teens should have a safe place to go after school where they can be active physically and academically.
After a phone call to the YMCA, the working mother learned of the Kroehler Teen Zone, where her son could come to work on homework, play racquetball, go swimming or watch a movie, all under the watchful eyes of nurturing Y staff members.
The Y provided a safe and nurturing alternative to this woman’s son. Instead of having to go home alone, he was able to go to a welcoming environment which also allowed him to make new friends, get exercise and gain a better sense of self-confidence.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Kroehler Family YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for over 100 years.
Between the laughter of a preschool child, the splash of a swim lesson and the smile that says “you’re welcome,” the Kroehler YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
Since 1911, the Kroehler Family YMCA has served the thriving communities of Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbrook and Lisle. Today for more than 8,680 members, 50 volunteers and 426 program participants, the Kroehler Family YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
