Our History

Nothing says community like Indian Boundary YMCA History. Indian Boundary YMCA has been going strong since 1954.

For years south eastern DuPage County residents traveled considerable distance to access Y services. Downers Grove residents mobilized in the 1950’s and succeeded in opening a storefront YMCA in 1954. Named the Indian Boundary YMCA, the Y grew into a full facility in 1970. Collectively local families donated thirteen acres of property and helped raise funds to build the Y at 711 59th Street in Downers Grove. In 1980, the Y added the field house to provide additional options and program space. The YMCA has a long history of serving the Downers Grove Community. Programs like Indian Guides/Adventure Guides are well known throughout the region, thousands of kids learned to swim at the Y, played organized sports and attended day camp. The Y’s Men’s (and Women’s) Club has served the Y and the community for years and the Downtown Downer’s Grove Market hosted by the Y is a regular part of the community history. Today, more than 13,000 members walk through the doors at IBY each year. An additional 8,000 program members enroll in YMCA programs, participate in YMCA community events and use YMCA meeting rooms and facility offerings. The Y remains a relevant and vibrant presence in DuPage County.
