Great story on Joyce on determination and challenge. "

Meet Member Joyce Gulliford

About 2 years ago Joyce started training for Triathlons.  She never considered here self an athlete and dislikes working out.  Joyce’s husband Ken has been a long time member.  Joyce started using the YMCA herself to train for the swim portion of triathlons.

On July 8 and at age 72, Joyce has completed her first Half Iron Man in Muncie, Indiana.  A Half Ironman consists of 1.2 mile Swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.  Joyce completed in 8 hours and 19 minutes, the cut off time was 8 hours and 30 minutes.

When Joyce first started doing triathlons, she did power walk and then started to train doing a walk run and was grateful for the indoor track at the YMCA.  She would train up to 10 miles sometimes indoors.

In April Joyce had a bicycling accident and had a slight set back and could not train for 6 weeks.  But that did not keep Joyce from giving up.

Once again Joyce will be 72 in November and is glad that she completed this challenge, does not intend to do another one, but will continue with Triathlon Sprints and fun bike rides.  Joyce her husband Ken and family are avid cyclers and have done bike trips that was up to 100 miles long.

Great job to Joyce Guillford.
