Meet our staff member, Maria Kasher. Maria is from Puerto Rico so she is fluent in both English and Spanish. She moved to Illinois to work as a teacher in the Hispanic neighborhoods of Chicago. She is a certified teacher in Language Arts, Bilingual Education, ESL, as well as Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Curriculum Development. Maria works as a teacher in our Kindergarten Enrichment program, Littlest Leapers, and is also in charge of booking birthday parties at our facility.
In 2006, after taking a break from teaching to start a family, she felt the need to re-gain her health and fitness. She chose the Indian Boundary YMCA because, of all of the other fitness facilities in the area, the IBY childcare staff provided the most nurturing and comforting care for her kids. With her kids enjoying the programs at IBY, and her fitness level improving, she decided it was time to reach for a new goal, the marathon.
Maria believes working at the Y completely embraces the mission of healthy families. This is a safe and healthy place where our communitiy can go to and develop lifelong frienedships and healthy habits. She loves seeing the Y kids grown up and get their first jobs jobs at th Y. She loves mentoring them and helping them navigate towards success in their first job.
Fun Fact about Maria:
If she could have a superpower she would have the power to change the way people think. With all the negativty in the world she would like to be apart of changing that.
Maria runs marathons and her net Marathon is in Whitesands Missile Range,NM. She will be covering 26.2 miles with a 35lb backpack on. It is called the "Bataan Memorial Death March" in honor of the event that took place during WWII in the Philipines. She grew up in a military base in Puerto Rico so she has a lot of family and friends who are either active duty or veterans. This race is in tribute to them. That's why you will see her walk around the building with a huge backpack on.
The IBY would like to congradulate Maria for being our first employee of the month in 2019!
