A CLOSER LOOK
A few years ago, teen volunteer Hannah approached the High Ridge YMCA to make her case for a teen basketball league. She argued that when the Y’s gym isn’t open for basketball, teens are on the street and more susceptible to becoming involved in criminal activity. The Y agreed with Hannah and decided to create a teen basketball league to keep these kids in the gym safe, engaged and having fun.
Today, more than 50 teens gather in the High Ridge YMCA gym every Saturday to play hoops under the guidance of volunteer coaches and mentors. Many can’t afford to join the recreational leagues that are offered in the surrounding neighborhoods, so they are grateful for the low-cost and high quality opportunity the Y offers. Families and friends fill the gymnasium to watch their favorite players compete in a safe and structured environment. Hannah continues to volunteer her time with High Ridge YMCA and now helps administer the league, where every Saturday she can see her dream of a fun and safe alternative for teens come to fruition.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the High Ridge YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for more than 61 years.
Between the splash of a swim lesson, the smile that says “you’re welcome” and the hum of members exercising, the High Ridge YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
The High Ridge YMCA serves the diverse communities of Rogers Park and West Ridge. For more than 2,025 members, 22 volunteers and 3,300 program participants, the High Ridge YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
