A CLOSER LOOK
When Joe Duffy, an instructor who works with area high school special needs students, first approached the Greater LaGrange Y looking for workout space and fitness instruction, he thought his lack of funding for the initiative might be a deterrent. But as Greater LaGrange YMCA Executive Director Bridgette Letizia explained, partnering with groups like Joe’s is what the Y is all about. “We create opportunities for everyone in our community,” she said.
Through their partnership, the Greater LaGrange YMCA’s Impact 4 Life program was developed. This program teaches special needs children and adults the importance of getting fit and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.
Ryan, who is 19 and now an active Y member, said the skills and motivation he learned at the Y helped him break his smoking habit. While Tommy, who is 20 and likes the greater energy exercise affords him, worked with a Y trainer to progress from jogging one mile to running two on the treadmill. Ryan and Tommy are only two of the many students who have benefitted from this program.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Greater La Grange YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for over 69 years.
Between the humming of the treadmill, children laughing in preschool and the splash of a swim lesson, the Greater La Grange YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
The Greater La Grange YMCA serves the communities of La Grange, La Grange Park, Broadview, Burr Ridge, Brookfield, Countryside, Hinsdale, Indian Head Park, Riverside, Brookfield, Westchester, Western Springs, Willow Springs and more. For more than 4,900 members and 700 volunteers, the Greater La Grange YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
