Affectionately known as the “squirrel lady”, this month’s Super Staff winner, Teri Helmboldt has been at Foglia off and on since 2002. Teri works in Member Services and you will see her as an early morning, enthusiastic greeter or a cheery smile at the Member Services desk. Teri loves the Y because of the relationships staff and members have together and the opportunity to serve the community at large. She witnesses the transformations our members have and knows she plays a role in making a difference. She often receives personal notes from members thanking her for her warm daily welcome and ongoing support. Teri fondly thinks of the Foglia Y as a “Cheers” facility “where everyone knows your name”. She loves providing above and beyond customer service and every member and guest is a treated as a priority.
Teri was born in Bowling Green Ohio, and has two younger siblings. Because of her father’s occupation, Teri and her family relocated around the country frequently. It was because of this transient lifestyle, Teri had to learn how to make friends and build relationships quickly at a very young age. She was close to her grandparents who helped raise her. Her grandfather was an active member at the Rockford Y and it is there where she learned how to swim. She reflects, “Those were difficult times in my life, I was always longing for a place to call home”. Teri has made a home for her family and has raised two daughters, Ellen and Emily, and a son Matt. She is close to her mother and smiles when she thinks about the influence she had on Teri’s life, offering constant guidance and support. Teri has a compassionate and caring heart and during a time when she was battling bouts of Depression, she rescued a baby squirrel whom she named Sheldon. Sheldon was with her for two years, provided her great comfort, and gave her purpose; baby squirrels are needy creatures. Since then, she has fostered 13 rescued squirrels and hence, has earned the nickname “squirrel lady”. Her husband Bob has learned to share his home with squirrels, dogs and whatever other creature Teri brings home.
When Teri is not engaging with members, guests and squirrels, she can be found on a warm beach, which she considers her happy place. She likes traveling, but ultimately searches for a beach destination. She loves to hike and enjoys being in the outdoors. Teri is an avid reader, suspense novels are her favorite. Teri also has a creative side and creates beadwork, jewelry, homemade greeting cards and crochet work every chance she gets. Share a smile with Teri, and she will welcome you by name. She is a valued member of our Foglia team and well deserving of the Super Staff recognition.
