If you have seen a new face on the Fitness floor lately, chances are our new Fitness Director Mike Compton has stopped and said hello, Mike has an outgoing and welcoming presence.
Mike joins us from a CrossFit franchise in Crystal Lake and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, passion, enthusiasm and drive. He is eager to make connections with members, spearhead new programming, improve space and flow, and support the Y’s mission of Healthy Living. He has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Nutrition from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He loves high intensity workout training and has experience working with all age groups, beginners to the pros.
Mike has a special place in his heart for the YMCA. He and his older sister Jenna, and younger brother Matthew, were Y kids. They grew up in the Greater St. Louis Area and along with their parents, spent time at the local Y. They played sports together, worked out, and enjoyed being active as a family. Mike’s mom Lori worked at the Y and ran the Day Camp program in the summer. Mike reflects fondly on the time spent at his local Y playing league basketball, learning to swim, and the introduction to the world of fitness. In high school, Mike remained active in sports, playing basketball, football, tennis, baseball and wrestling. His favorite sport at the time was baseball, and as a second baseman, saw lots of playing time. He continued to play tennis and football at SIUE. He gravitated to high intensity fitness training and opted to make it a career choice.
When Mike is not working or working out, he and his girlfriend love being outdoors, hiking, exploring and playing with his dog Achilles. He enjoys boating, wakeboarding and traveling. Oregon and Colorado are two of his frequent destinations. Another favorite pastime is taking family road trips. As a roller coaster enthusiast, he often visits different venues in search of new coaster challenges. He is a huge Star Wars and Game of Throne fan, and plays video games with his siblings when he has the chance. He loves deep-dish pizza and Chinese food but tries to eat healthy most of the time. He also likes documentaries and reads business and entrepreneurial books, as he is a lifelong learner.
Mike is easy going and approachable. He wants to get to know our members and assist them on their fitness journeys. Look for Mike in the office at the top of the stairs or on the Fitness floor, and take the opportunity to get to know him. Welcome Mike!
