October is Family Health Month and it is the perfect time to make lasting and meaningful lifestyle changes that will benefit your entire family! Family health is what guides our choices in diet, how active our lifestyles are, and how we manage our emotions. Building a health compass for your family will empower them to make healthy choices every day.
Here are a few ways you can improve your family’s health:
1. Give dinnertime in your household a makeover! Throughout the day we all have our own busy schedules and dinnertime is a great opportunity to come together and bond over a meal.
Turn off the TV- Harvard researchers found that we tend to eat more when we are distracted. Powering off all screens during dinner time allows your family to focus on one another and communicate better. This will improve the emotional health of your child!
Try new foods! Sharing your favorite healthy meals with your family can be fun. Fruits and Veggies- More Matters created a list of quick and healthy recipes for your family to try!
2. Get enough sleep. Work with your family to establish a healthy sleep schedule.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that proper sleep can prevent diabetes, obesity, poor mental health, and behavioral problems. Visit their website for tips on getting good sleep!
3. Stay active in every season. Physical activity such as playing outside or taking a walk together can boost your family’s health!
According to the PBS.org website, parents who exercise with their children are teaching them the skills they need to live a healthy lifestyle and reinforcing family bonds.
As the months get colder finding indoor activities can be helpful. Click here for more information on YMCA Family Fitness Classes!
