September 15, 2017
This week, September 15-24, 2017, is Welcoming Week, an annual celebration that brings together immigrants and U.S.-born residents to promote cross-cultural understanding and raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone. During this time, we celebrate the contributions of immigrants and refugees and the role communities play to help new Americans adapt to their new home.
At the Y, we believe communities are at their strongest when everyone feels valued, has support to reach their potential and can fully participate in society. For more than 170 years, the Y has helped immigrants and prepared receiving communities to be welcoming and inclusive.
The Y of Metro Chicago proudly supports legislation in Congress that will make the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, better known as DACA, a permanent solution for undocumented young people to gain citizenship. The program has allowed 787,580 young people who were brought to the United States illegally as children to remain in the country, work legally and attend school in the U.S. for renewable two-year periods.
Join us in affirming our values by showing the world that you live in a welcoming community. During the month of September, celebrate Welcoming Week by letting your foreign-born neighbors know that they are welcome and appreciated in your community by filling out one of the sign templates below. Take a photo with your sign and share it on social media using the hashtags #WelcomingWeek and #YforAll.
