At the Y, afterschool is more than just a time of day. It’s an opportunity to nurture children’s development so they can reach their fullest potential. Offered at nearly 2,000 YMCAs across the country, afterschool programs serve 580,000 youth each year. The Y is committed to helping kids learn, grow and thrive in a healthy environment where they can establish positive relationships and experience a sense of accomplishment and belonging— critical ingredients for successful youth development.
Why Choose Afterschool at the Y?
Cooking with Miss Devin at Indian Boundary Y
By participating in fun and educational activities during afterschool programs at the Y, children are able to learn new skills, explore their interests, develop healthy habits and bolster their self-esteem. At the Indian Boundary YMCA in Downers Grove, Y staffer Devin Williams teaches fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders how to cook healthy meals on a low temperature griddle as an afterschool enrichment activity.
“One child enjoyed the experience so much that he asked his mother to get a griddle so he could practice at home and share his new healthy cooking skills with his family,” she said.
