8 Frantic Hours in Chicago on Fourth of July

A group of Chicago Tribune reporters spread across Chicago over the July 4th holiday weekend and then conducted follow-up interviews to chronicle the violence that occurred.

Eddie Bocanegra, Co-Executive Director of the YMCA of Metro Chicago’s Youth Safety and Violence Prevention initiative, was interviewed about an 18-year-old youth in the Y’s Urban Warriors mentoring program who was a victim of a shooting in Little Village.

In the hospital lobby, he learned that the teen would live. Eddie continued to visit him over the next few days, bringing a simple but critical message in his never-ending efforts to yank kids back from the violence. “I wanted him to know that people do care,” he said.
