7 Things To Do With Your Family in Chicago This November

November 01, 2017

Keep your family active, happy and healthy throughout the month of November, both at the Y and beyond."

Despite Thanksgiving, the month of November can be challenging for a variety of reasons. In Chicago, it usually means the arrival of freezing temperatures, snow, and — after Daylight Savings ends on November 5 — long, dark nights.

But that doesn’t mean it’s time to hibernate. Here are seven activities to keep you and your family active, happy and healthy throughout the month of November.

  1. School Days Out at the Y. When school’s out for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Y’s School Days Out program helps working parents keep their school-age children safe and engaged with a full day of fun and enriching activities. Check with your nearest membership center for days, times, and fees.

  2. Explore Your Neighborhood at Gallery Weekend Chicago. During two consecutive weekends (Nov 3-5 and 10-12), Chicago will host pop-up galleries, performances, and artist talks at 25 participating locations.

  3. Celebrate the Arts at Peacebook 2017. Head to La Follette Park (Nov 2-4) for theater, dance, and spoken word performances themed around making peace in Chicago.

  4. Check Out This Giant Toy Fair. Chicago Toy and Game Week includes a huge toy fair at Navy Pier (Nov 18-19).

  5. Watch the Trees Get Lit. The Morton Arboretum’s annual tree lights open November 17 and run through New Year’s Day.

  6. Head to the Parade. The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade runs up State Street on Thanksgiving morning (Nov 23) from 8 to 11 a.m. If you can’t be there in person, watch it on WGN-TV.

  7. Celebrate Thanksgiving Season with the Y. Some of our membership centers are offering Thanksgiving-themed activities throughout November, like Operation Turkey Drop at the Kroehler Family Y. Check your nearest center for details.
