A CLOSER LOOK
The South Side YMCA is an anchor for the more than 10 communities it serves on the south side of Chicago. From teaching children and families the critical and life-saving skill of swimming, to keeping South Side Y seniors fit through its silver sneakers program, to helping prevent youth violence by keeping children active and engaged, the South Side YMCA offers something for everyone. For more than two decades, this Y has been a safe, inviting place for the community.
One of the South Side Y’s signature programs is the Youth Basketball Association (YBA). This program, which the Y has offered for nearly 40 years, provides so much more than simply teaching 6-17 year olds the basics of basketball. YBA also acts as a powerful youth violence prevention measure by offering these children a safe place to have fun, as well as access to positive role models in the form of coaches, staff and the many community volunteers who devote their time and energy to motivating and inspiring the young participants. Throughout the course of the program, the changes in the character of these children are numerous: they practice teamwork. They build their self-confidence. And anytime they lose a game, but get back up and still try, the Y is teaching them the art of resiliency.
Academic achievement is another component of YBA. Youth must bring their report cards to YMCA staff to discuss their grades, and tutoring also is made available to ensure that success in school is well within the YBA students’ reach. The South Side Y is proud to help transform our community through this critical program.

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the South Side YMCA has been proud to help our communities learn, grow and thrive for over 20 years.
Between the basketball court, swimming pool and fitness center the South Side YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.
The South Side YMCA serves more than 10 major communities on the south side of Chicago. For more than 3,000 members, 200 volunteers and 500 program participants, the South Side YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy habits.
At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and giving back and providing support for our neighbors. From fitness to wellness to community service, everything we do at the Y is an exercise in possibility.
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That's because, in neighborhoods across Chicagoland, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
