Providing swim lessons to children and families, thereby keeping them healthy and safe, is a core component of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s mission to transform communities. The South Side YMCA recently received a grant from the USA Swimming Foundation that will enable them to provide an additional 160 local children with eight swim lessons each.
“The YMCA gives swim lessons to more than 16,000 youth and families every year,” said Maureen McCarthy, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago Senior Executive Director of Programming. “Research shows that swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88%, which is why we’re very grateful for the Make a Splash grant that will help us teach this valuable, life-saving skill to more area children.”
The South Side YMCA was one of only 40 applicants to receive this grant, from an original pool of more than 130 organizations. The grant will cover swim instructor and lifeguard salaries.
