Upcoming Changes at the South Chicago Y

After an extensive review, we've made the difficult decision to close the South Chicago Y member center on October 31, 2017. This will not impact the Senior Housing complex, however, which will continue to operate, and we are also committed to continuing our YSVP programs in the community."

Dear South Chicago Y Family,

Thank you for your support of the South Chicago YMCA. It has been our honor to provide an environment where community members can learn, grow stronger together and thrive for more than 90 years. After an extensive review, we've made the difficult decision to close the South Chicago Y member center on October 31, 2017.

This decision was not made in haste; rather, it was deliberated with the weight that our members and staff deserve. To ensure we maximize our impact in the community, the YMCA continually assesses programs and resources to determine the best and most sustainable ways to positively impact the individuals and families we serve. Over several years, membership and program participation at the South Chicago Y, including Head Start and Early Head Start enrollment, have steadily declined. Combined with the rising costs of maintaining an aging, fixed facility, we’ve reached the point that we’re no longer able to sustain member center operations.

Closing the member center will not impact the Senior Housing complex, however, which will continue to operate. We are also committed to continuing our Youth Safety and Violence Prevention (YSVP) programming in this community.

We welcome the community to join us at the South Side YMCA, located at 6330 S. Stony Island Avenue. South Chicago Y members who transfer to South Side will continue to pay their current membership rate in appreciation of their continued support. Please contact Member Services at 773.905.5115 with any questions or concerns. We truly regret any inconvenience and hope to see you at the South Side Y.
