03/16/11 - YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago Takes Ownership of the Former YMCA of McHenry County

April 03, 2011

CHICAGO – March 16, 2011 – Effective tomorrow, March 17, 2011, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago takes ownership of the former YMCA of McHenry County. The Y of Metro Chicago purchased the McHenry County Y building, equipment and land in Crystal Lake as part of an Asset Purchase Agreement following the McHenry County Y filing for bankruptcy earlier this year.

The Y of Metro Chicago brings more than 150 years of service and stability to the McHenry region. Through its 65 locations and more than 100 extension sites, the Y of Metro Chicago provides programs and services to more than half a million kids, families and adults annually throughout Chicagoland.

“We look forward to expanding our mission of supporting youth development, healthy living and social responsibility to the McHenry community,” said Richard Malone, President & CEO, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. “The Y is dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities – and that’s just what we intend to do at the McHenry Y.”

McHenry Y members will notice some added benefits, including access to all Y of Metro Chicago facilities throughout Chicagoland. Members also will begin to see new programs and services, including ActivTrax – a web-based training and nutrition program – a benefit included in all Y of Metro Chicago memberships. Membership rates are unchanged through 2011. In addition, starting Sunday, March 20, the McHenry Y will offer extended hours on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Y of Metro Chicago will soon be reaching out to current McHenry Y members and community members to assess their needs for health, recreation, sports, childcare and youth programming. “We look forward to collaborating with community partners to meet those needs through innovative local programming both on-site and outside the McHenry Y membership facility,” said Malone.

The Y of Metro Chicago has been working with local McHenry Y staff who are known and trusted by the community to assist in the transition, and will meet with them regarding potential employment opportunities under the new ownership structure.
