At the heart of the McCormick Tribune YMCA is the power to transform—both yourself and the world around you.

A CLOSER LOOK

It’s often been said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. For 35 North Grand high schoolers on the path to accomplishing a great physical achievement—running a half marathon—the first step to crossing that finish line was to put in the work.

The North Grand students were provided two-month summer scholarships provided by the McCormick Tribune YMCA, to use YMCA equipment and facilities to perfect the art of running 13.1 miles. YMCA trainers were on hand to help coach and provide motivation to the teens throughout the two months. In addition to learning about the importance of good health and fitness, they were also able to develop friendships and build their self-confidence.

Thanks to the efforts of the YMCA, North Grand High School faculty, the Chicago Area Runners Association and the students’ own perseverance, medals weren’t the only thing these 35 teens ran away with after crossing the finish line. They now had the knowledge and power that they could do anything they set their minds to, as long as they were willing to back up their dreams with hard work and perserverance.

THE McCORMICK TRIBUNE YMCA

As a nonprofit organization committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the McCormick Tribune YMCA has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive for over 13 years.

Between the laughter of children working in the computer lab, the smile that says “you’re welcome” and the sights of children gardening and learning the importance of healthy nutrition, the McCormick Tribune YMCA strengthens bodies, minds and communities. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, program participants and staff to make a difference.

The McCormick Tribune YMCA serves the burgeoning communities of Logan Square and Humboldt Park. For more than 2,400 members, 150 volunteers and 750 program participants, the McCormick Tribune YMCA is a destination where local children and families have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and where people of all ages, interests and abilities can build and maintain healthy lifestyle habits.

THE Y MEETS COMMUNITY NEEDS
