Two graduates of the Y's Urban Warriors mentoring program talk about why they picked up a gun and how that decision changed their lives. (WBEZ)"

Alex and Jaime, graduates of the Y's Urban Warriors mentoring program, recently shared their personal stories of life on the streets and what it's like inside a gang with WBEZ's "Every Other Hour."

Both young men joined gangs at the age of 12 after experiencing the tragic death of family members. Gang leaders lure young teens with the promise of protection, acceptance, money and drugs. This intentional recruitment contributes to the ongoing cycle of juvenile offenders and gun violence in the city. According to the University of Chicago's 2-16 report, nearly 25 percent of people arrested for homicide and murder in Chicago last year were under the age of 20.

In this poignant story titled "There's a story behind why we shoot," Alex and Jaime talk about the events leading up picking up a gun for the first time and how the experience changed their lives. Listen to their stories on WBEZ.
