Story Squad participants Brian, Daniel, Jaime and Kevon joined WBEZ's Richard Steele on The Barber Shop Show to share their personal audio stories and how self-expression helps them to reconnect with their families and strengthen their communities."

WBEZ host Richard Steele invited several teens from the Y’s Youth Safety and Violence Prevention program’s (YSVP) Story Squad to join him last month on The Barber Shop Show, a no-holds-barred roundtable discussion that airs weekly on Vocalo.

Storytellers Brian, Daniel, Jaime and Kevon, along with YSVP operations coordinator Grant Buhr, visited Carter's Barber Shop in North Lawndale on Jan. 8 to share their personal audio stories and how self-expression helps them to reconnect with their families and strengthen their communities.

“This project was born out of the knowledge that young people in our city are experts in the issues going on in our communities,” Buhr said. “Too often, their voices are excluded from the conversations that are crucial for us working on our community’s issues to understand what’s going on.”

The youth talked about the experiences behind their narratives, poems and songs, as well as the process of collaborating with their friends and siblings to produce the recordings. Steele also encouraged them to speak freely on the themes of the stories, from growing up in single-parent households, to making sense of the media’s portrayal of local violence and crime.

“These youngsters say what’s on their minds,” Steele said. “They’re not influenced to say one thing or the other, one way or the other. It’s whatever their thoughts are, and I think that’s what makes it so interesting and pure.”

The Barber Shop Show airs live at noon on Fridays on Vocalo 91.1 FM. It also airs as a rebroadcast on Sundays at 3 p.m. on WBEZ 91.5 FM.
